Boatbuilding Plant Goes Up in Smoke

This makes the second canoe/kayak plant to be destroyed by fire in just the last few weeks.  This fire occurred at Placid Boatworks, in Lake Placid, Adirondacks on January 25.  Three businesses were located in the building.  It was a total loss, and with everything covered with ice from fighting the fire with temperatures in the teens, it may take awhile to determine the exact cause.  It has already been reported as an apparent accidental fire.

Joe Moore, the owner of Placid Boatworks, says everything inside the shop was lost, including about 20 boats currently in inventory.  He vows to resume boatbuilding in a temporary facility, and has asked current owners of the line to allow him the use of their boats to build new molds from them.
